IN OCTOBER 2024...
...myself (Shaun) and my friend Brian (Wobbly) were informed of a 1962 MG Midget in a garage, that had been purchased by the owner in that year... he used it as a family car.
We contacted the family and arranged to look at the car.
IT WAS TAKEN OFF THE ROAD IN 2011...
...to undergo a full restoration. The garage was full of car parts piled high - a number of engines, gearboxes and many bags and boxes of new parts.

WE CHATTED TO THE FAMILY...
...who said that their husband/dad had started the restoration but
was unable to complete it as he had been diagnosed with dementia and had to go and live in a care home. This was very sad to hear, he loved the MG and wanted to bring it back to
its former glory.

AFTER SOME SERIOUS THOUGHT...
...we decided to go ahead and take the project on. All the parts were loaded into my car and transported to my garage. The family also contributed files of receipts and information including many workshop and restoration manuals. The MG itself is a rolling chassis so it was pushed through Cottenham to temporary
accommodation in a garage and then on to my garage on 29th November 2024.
WE DECIDED...
...that we would finish the restoration and sell the car, with all profits going to the Alzheimer’s Society. This charity and the effects of this cruel illness are close to my heart as I lost my mum to Dementia in 2020. The family were overjoyed at hearing this. We said that we would restore the MG and take their husband/dad out for a drive in it. He has asked his wife “How is my little MG getting on?“

MY PARTNER IN THIS PROJECT...
...has always been Wobbly — Brian Christopher Dean.
It’s with deep sadness and shock that I have to share that he was tragically killed in an accident on Wednesday, 18th June.
We had been working closely on the build right up until that point: problem-solving, planning, taking shopping trips to the MG Owners Club headquarters, and simply enjoying the process together. Wobbly had been a mechanic for over 60 years — there wasn’t much he didn’t know about cars. He was really enjoying the challenge of getting the little 950cc engine back to its best, even making bespoke tools to do the job properly.
Incredibly, we discovered that he had carried out an MOT on this very MG back in 1985. It didn’t come as a huge surprise, but it added an extra layer of connection between him and the car.
All of the welding has now been completed, and it’s turned into a great, solid, rust-free example. I’ll carry on with the project — I know Wobbly would have wanted me to. The next steps, though difficult without him, are to prep the bodywork ahead of a full respray, and strip down the seats for restoration. A few new parts have already been ordered.
